Shelley James &Cal
Coleman are a husband and wife duo performing all along the
west coast since 1993. Currrently based in Los Angeles, the couple has been working and performing with the Escovedo Family, Jonathan Butler, and Andy Fraser in different capacities. Shelley sings and plays electric and acoustic
guitars, accompanied by Cal's dynamic bass guitar and background
vocals. Shelley sang with the Escovedo Orchestra in December 2006 at the Disney Concert hall. Cal played bass for Andy Fraser of Free in May 2006Their show also includes their unique a capella arrangements
which features Shelley's spine-tingling vocals and Cal on bass and
drums using only his voice. Shelley & Cal have a loyal following
of true music lovers for their repertoire of songs mixing classic
pop, rock, soul, and power ballads.
Canadian born, Shelley grew up singing 4-part harmony with her family,
touring western Canada. She developed her pop singing through her
teens and then studied music seriously in college, touring the club
circuit in the Pacific Northwest upon graduation. Cal grew up in
a musical family also, performing from a young age as well. He developed
his bass chops playing in jazz/blues, reggae, and soul groups before
and after college and later met Shelley.
The Duo played together in their jazz/rock band 'Pyramid Breakfast'
through the '90s. They also lent their talents to the disco band
Satin Love Orchestra from '97-'04, and to the Pink Floyd tribute
band the "Floydian Slips" from '98-'04. Their main musical
baby was and has always been their own band together-"Shelley
James m u s i c b o x".
They opened the MacDonald Theatre, and were given the KRVM radio
Community Service Award for their contributions to the Eugene, Oregon
arts scene by the president of the station. Currently based in Los
Angeles, they have been honored to perform with Sheila E., Pete
Escovedo, Peter Michael, William Kennedy, Andy Fraser, and Jonathan
Butler.
Shelley's voice was described by the program director of KLCC radio
as "fine crystal and pure as a summer breeze". Shelley
and Cal have written and produced three original "Shelley James"
albums. One review wrote "backed by some of Portland's superstar
session players, James swings and grooves tunefully and with tasteful
restraint." James newest album includes
some of L.A.'s top session players including Michael Thompson (Michael
Jackson, Anita Baker), and Mike Porcaro (Toto). They are currently
working on Shelley's long awaited Christmas album and their a capella
Duo album.

"Shelley James has a
sound big enough to entertain at the McDonald, so one could expect
Luna to be filled to the brim with her musical verve. A fan of all
types of music, her sound if difficult to classify, but nevertheless
she's got a devoted following of dance-loving concert-goers."
